Fishing by casting of Net - Environmentally friendly method

Photo shows a fisherman is casting his net to catch fishes in Thondamanaru lagoon, Jaffna Peninsula. This method of fishing is called ‘Vechchu Valai’ in Tamil. Even though ‘Vechchu Valai’ has got limitations in fishing, still it is considered as one of the best method of fishing due to the absence of machinery and fuel – i.e it does not pollute environment.
‘Vechchu Valai’ is even now commonly seen in all the parts of Srilanka.
