Low pressure belt in the Northeast of Sri Lanka brings heavy rain to the Northern part of Srilanka including Mullaitivu, kilinochchi and Jaffna Peninsula. Flooding is visibility seen in many places and heavy rainfall forcing the water from inlands into the drainage system along the coastal line.
The Meteorology Department has issued a warning to the naval and fishing communities in the South, East, Northwest and the Northern coast of the country as strong winds, showers and thunder showers were expected due to a low pressure belt in the Northeast of Sri Lanka.
The Department said possibility of strong winds of 70- 80 kmph was expected across the island with the northern half of the country bearing the brunt of the change in weather.
“Heavy showers, over 150 mm, is expected at any time of the day with cloudy skies and showers expected across the island throughout the day,” the Met Department said
The Jaffna Peninsula is most fertile, being irrigated from numerous wells, which are being filled during North east Monsoon from late October till beginning of January.
Reports says the sluice gates of Iranamadu, the largest controversial water reservoir in the main land Vanni region, and Akkarayan water reservoir have been opened in order to control flooding.
