Hundreds of people across the Vadamaradchi gathered at Thiruvil, Valvettithurai to mark Martyr day ('Maaveerar Naal') today evening.
The events commenced at 1805 hours by lighting the main flame.
The main flame of remembrance was lit at 6.05 by Mrs.Kinniyamma, the mother of 'Murali' and 'Kinni', following which a thousand flames were lit by the participants.
Maaveerar Naal, which remembers those who sacrificed their lives in the ethnic conflict, is marked on November 27 yearly, in memory of the first death of a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadre in fighting - Sathyanathan alias Shankar who died in combat on November 27, 1982.
