The Srilankan army personnel have vacated their camp from Valvettithurai junction, which was in place since 1996, after taking the control from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The residents of this area have been notified couple of days ago to come and take over their land, that has been occupied by the military. By the withdrawal army camp from Valvettithurai junction, dozen of houses, former Customs land and a Sea beach are freed, which would benefit the normalcy of those people residing in this area and adjacent areas.
Many people are visiting the area today after allowing the civilian to enter into the former military complex. However couple of army personnel still present in the former camp.It is yet to be confirmed that whether the residents will now onwards be allowed to live in their houses?
Evevnthough Tamil parties like TNA is questioning the number of troops in the North and East, the government and military claim that the troop presence is vital in the North and East, despite the end of the war, due to the fact that the ‘Tigers’ ideology is yet alive.
The new Army camp, which was made a couple of months ago, is located at Orikadu, Valvettithurai, where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam had kept a Popular Sea base – called ‘Kadal Pura’ (Sea Peigeion).
The New Orikadu Army camp is located at about 1.2 Kilometers west of VVT Junction in the Point Pedro – Kankesanthurai Road.
