The foundation stone for the new vegetable market was laid today, in Valvettithurai. The ceremony took place at about 1200 hours, where members of Valvettithurai urban council and number of civilians were present at the site of the event.
It is planned to construct the new vegetable market, just aside of the present vegetable market, along the Point pedro - KKS road. The present project is under NELSIP (North East Local Services Improvement Project), and expected to cost about 50 million Srilankan Rupees.
It is learnt that the initial plan for the new Vegetable market had been drafted in 1990's by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, as "Valvettithurai project", during the peace talks with then Government.
