Thondaimanaru Selva Sannithi chariot festival draws thousands of devotees

The chariot (or "Ther" in Tamil) festival of the historic Thondaimanaru Selva Sannithi Murugan temple in Jaffna Peninsula was held yesterday morning with thousands of devotees from all over the island and hundreds of displaced Tamils of Western countries paricipating the event.
The chief Deity, Lord Murugan's Vel, was taken from the temple yesterday morning at about 08:30 hours to the conventionally decorated chariot, which has been surrounded by a huge number of devotees.
Crowd of devotees was comparatively slightly higher than the previous years and people kept coming from morning through noon, including Kavadi, Thokuk kaavadi (Paravai Kavadi) etc.
Further It was observed that both main roads leading to the Selva Sannithi temple and temporarily made roads across the Thondaimanaru river were packed with crowd of people since morning till late evening.
Group of volunteers had been deployed for controlling the mass crowd of devotees.
The last day festival of Theeraththam (Holy bath) is presently taking place, which too have drawn mass number of devotees.
The annual festival of historic Thondaimanaru Selva Sanity temple, in Jaffna, has commenced with Kodiyetram on 7th of August 2013
Maunathiruvizha (Silance festival) is a very important ritual which is not seen in any other temples in the Island, which is observed in the evening of the last day (today)
Thondaimanaru Selva Sannithi temple is located at about 4 Km west of Valvettithurai and it falls under Valvettithurai urban council.
