Depression lies 200 Nm east of Point Pedro, Jaffna coast experiences strong wind and rough seas

A low pressure system developed yesterday at about 400 nautical miles east of Trincomalee, Srilanka, has now turned into Depression. The depression, which initially moved in a westward direction, is now moving in a West-North-westwards direction and it is expected to move in the same direction in the next 36 hours.

The depression which is now about 200 nautical miles east of Point Pedro of the Jaffna Peninsula, results strong winds and rough seas in the coastal areas of north and east of the Jaffna Peninsula, especially the coastal belt from Point Pedro to Salai, including Kaddaikadu, Nagarkovil and Verrilaikkeni.

Many places in Jaffna Peninsula experiences unsettled weather of overcast sky with frequent showers and occasional thundershowers. Thundershowers are expected to develop further during the night with lightening. There may be temporary localized strong winds during thunder showers and gust winds along the coastal region.

Due to the prevailing unsettled weather, some of the Schools in the Jaffna Peninsula, especially in the coastal region have been shut down by mid day.

The landfall has been predicted to be tomorrow on 16th of November, between Chnnai and of Nagapattinam (Nagapatnam) of Tamil Nadu, India.

The region will also witness wind speeds of around 50 Km/h to 60 Km/h along with a period of incessant rain, which could impact daily lives by flooding the low-lying area.

It should be noted that Typhoon Haiyan, formed in the Pacific Ocean 2 weeks ago, landed in Tacloban city of Philippines on Leyte Island on 8th of November has made severe destruction to the lives and properties.
